This plant is typically an erect, medium-sized shrub, growing to a height of 2 to 2.5 metres (6.5 to 8 feet), sometimes reaching up to 3 meters in optimal conditions. It has slender, sometimes arching branches and light green, narrow, linear foliage.

It produces vibrant, orange-red, "bottlebrush" shaped flower spikes that can be up to 9 cm long. The flowering period is extensive, generally from spring through summer and sometimes into autumn or early winter, attracting nectar-feeding birds, bees, and other pollinators.
